DESCRIPTION:Greater Manchester CND is hosting a public meeting about alternatives to war. \n\n\n\nWith unstable leaders in both the US and North Korea\, the Tories spending billions on a new generation of nuclear weapons and conflict raging across the Middle East\, the global situation is looking bleak. \nWe’ve brought together a range of speakers to discuss better ways forward and alternatives to war\, including: \n– Dr Jenny Clegg\, an expert on North East Asia and active member of Labour CND\, will talk about North Korea\, US militarisation in the Pacific and nuclear weapons.\n– Ann Feltham\, Parliamentary Officer at Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT)\, will talk about the UK arms trade\, Saudi Arabia and arms conversion / defence diversification policies. \nThe session will be chaired by Dr Kate Hudson\, General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). \nPlease join us in the basement for what should be a lively discussion. \nThis event is a ten minute walk from Manchester Cathedral\, where John McDonnell will be speaking on the economy\, at 7pm (here –https://www.facebook.com/events/596622634061596/) \n——- \nLocation: Partisan – http://partisancollective.net/contact/ \n\n  \nNB. SUMMARY:End Toxic Prisons workshop
DESCRIPTION:All over the world prisons are toxic environments causing social and ecological harm. Folks from the US have been organising resistance at the intersection of mass incarceration and the environment\, successfully delaying the only current Federal prison construction for over 2 years! Through grassroots organizing\, advocacy and direct action they have been challenging the prison system which is putting prisoners at risk of dangerous environmental conditions\, as well as impacting surrounding communities and ecosystems by their construction and operation. Learn about their strategy and tactics\, as well as broader struggles of prison abolition\, anti-racism\, and environmental justice. \nInformation will then be shared about resistance to the six new mega-prisons in England and Wales\, which themselves are proposed for toxic sites\, including radiological contamination and asbestos pollution\, as well as habitat destruction at every site.
