DESCRIPTION:‘Those with their sights set optimistically on the National Lottery jackpot have a one in almost 14 million chance – the same odds of temperatures soaring beyond 30C in London on Christmas Day’ – Ladbrokes\, cited BBC News 2013 \nwhatever it amounts to is the title of a new body of work by artist Hilary O’ Mahony. This project was made in response to an observation of a vast amount of discarded scratch cards littering the streets in a South Manchester suburb. The lottery is an emotionally charged game. It creates many conflicting feelings\, most notably luck\, hope and disappointment. These associated feelings are encapsulated within this body of work raising questions about the ethics of the game. whatever it amounts to is concerned with value\, identity and self-pursuit. It positions the national lottery as a lens through which these societal concepts are explored.\n \n\nHilary O’ Mahony is an Irish artist currently living and working in Manchester. She graduated with a degree in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design\, Dublin\, Ireland in 2010. Hilary has exhibited extensively in Ireland and the UK as well as exhibitions in France and Nepal.
